Adult Education Skills Class Information (formerly called GED)

 

Our three skills classes have been designed to meet each student's academic needs.  Whether you want your GED, are getting ready to go to college, looking for a better job or just want to brush up on specific skills, our classes will work for you.  Our experienced instructors will assist you to learn at your own pace.  Funded by Federal and State Grants are classes are free.  You must attend orientation before entering our classes. 

1.  Beginning Education Skills

This class moves at a slower pace, teaching beginning skills in Math, English and Reading to help you develop a good base for future studies.  The class meets on Monday and Wednesday throughout the school year

2.  Intermediate Education Skills

Intermediate Math, English and Reading skills are introduced to prepare you for our Advanced class.  The class meets on Monday and Wednesday throughout the school year.

3.  Advanced Education Skills

Advanced Math, English and Reading skills are taught to prepare you for the GED test, College or a better job.  The class meets Tuesday and Thursday through the school year.

Students will be placed in a class after orientation and advance to higher classes as they accomplish their goals.

Evening classes meet from 6:00-8:30 pm

Volunteer Tutors Needed


Volunteer training is held at various times throughout the school year. This 2-day orientation includes an introduction to adult education, an explanation of opportunites available and in-depth training for the specific area you choose. Opportunities available include Teachers Aides, Administrative Aide and Volunteer Coordinator. Mornings, evenings and flexible schedules available. ESOL Registration and Classes


Classes focus on improving English skills through reading, writing, speaking and listening classes Classes also provide instruction in grammar, conversation and civics. Beginning,intermediate and advanced levels of instruction are provided along with our Intensive English Class. You can join us in a class at any time during the school year. All classes are individualized to meet each person's need.

Orientation and registration are held monthly. (except for December, March and April)

Classes meet at Shore Cultural Centre, 291 East 222nd Street, Euclid.

GED Test Fee Waivers


The Official Practice GED Test determines GED readiness. It takes approximately 4 1/2 hours to complete the practice test which covers all five test areas(writing skills, social studies, science, literature and math).

Individuals interested in taking the GED Practice Test are encouraged to attend an orientation as a "readiness indicator" for taking the GED Practice Test.  Individuals scoring above the 10th grade level on the initial assessment may be eligible to take the Official GED Practice Test.

 

Procedure for Official GED Test


You can apply for the Official GED Test on-line or through the mail.

 

 

 

 

On-line Procedure

1. Must have an email account. We can help you set one up.

2. Set up a Safe Account with Ohio Dept of Education (ODE). Have a drivers license and social security number handy.

4. Complete the application on-line.

Follow instructions to send a money order for $40 to Ohio Department of Education or use your credit card during the application process.

5. After three weeks (if you sent a money order) check on-line at ODE website. Use your safe account to access the secured database to see if you are ok to test or call 216-797-2942.

6. Once you are approved,call a local testing site to register for Official GED Test . Bring an Ohio Photo I.D. or Drivers's License on the day of the test.

7. You can check you scores on-line within 2 weeks using your safe account.

Paper Procedure

 

1. Fill out an application, have it notarized, and send it to Columbus for approval before signing up to take the test. Allow at least 4 weeks for approval.

Call 216-797-2942 to verify you are approved. Attach a money order for $40 to application.

2. Register in advance to take the Official GED test. Bring an Ohio Photo I.D. or Drivers's License on the day of the test.

3. Results will be sent to you within 6 weeks.

The Official GED Test is administered at Shore Cultural Center, 291 East 222nd Street, in room 133. It begins at 9:00 am and lasts until approximately 1:30. The test is given in two parts - you must attend both Saturdays.

GED Age Restrictions


Students 18 years of age must bring proof of withdrawal from high school along with a photo ID to orientation.

Students 17 years of age, accompanied by a parent or guardian, must bring high school withdrawal papers, proof of employment, an Authorized Age and Schooling Certificate and meet with the ABLE Director. Call 216-797-2942 for an appointment.
