Congratulations to Marcus Germany (AIID), one of only two students from Cuyahoga County to be selected as an Essex School Scholar.

The Martin W. Essex School for the Gifted is a unique opportunity for Ohio’s top high school students to broaden their vision of the future.

The School was founded in 1976 and named for Dr. Martin W. Essex, the State Superintendent of Public Instruction from 1966 to 1976. Now in its third decade, this one-week residential program emphasizes leadership and responsibility for the many exciting career options open to students with exceptional abilities.

Gifted eleventh-grade students, who will be seniors during the following school year, were eligible to submit applications to their superintendents. who then submitted one entry representing their district. The Essex committee read each application in the search for 70 of the state’s best and brightest. They searched for exceptional, unique and exciting responses to the essays, as well as strong recommendations from teachers. All finalists demonstrated high levels of potential leadership, intellectual curiosity, academic and/or artistic ability, and commitment to social responsibility.

The Essex School will be held June in Columbus at The Ohio State University. Activities for the week include seminars, workshops and independent studies in a variety of subjects, including government, the arts, science, human resources, the environment, technology, diversity, and career planning. In addition to classroom sessions, students participate in recreational activities, a talent show, and develop a newspaper that chronicles the events of the week. The overall curriculum is designed to provide enrichment opportunities that reach beyond the average high school experience.
