Board Meeting Breakdown. A recap of what took place at the Board Meeting this Week.

The Euclid Board of Education met on May 10, 2023, in the Board Room at the Fordyce Administration Building at 7:00 pm.

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 pm by Board President Kathy DeAngelis, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.

All Board Members were present.

The Board reviewed and accepted the agenda for the evening. 

The Board adopted the minutes for the April 12th, 2023 Board Meeting.

Proclamations and Recognitions

  • Mrs. Jacqueline Sturm, Director of Human Resources, read a proclamation that the Board Approved:

    • Proclaimed commendation for the retiring staff and faculty members for the 2022-2023 school year. The commendation recognized each retiree and congratulated & thanked them for their many years of service to Euclid and its students.  Those retirees include:

      • Prior to the board meeting, a small reception honoring the retirees was held in the lobby of Fordyce.

Early Learning Village School Recognitions and Presentation

Four Students were recognized at the meeting as Students of the Month. These students were acknowledged for having excellent attendance, no referrals, and completing all of their assignments.

Staff Members Ashley Dobbins and Joanne Kope were recognized as Staff Members of the Month for being flexible, supportive, organized and helpful.

Teachers Logan Zastawny and Dana Bizily were recognized as Faculty Members of the Month for being leaders and mentors in the building.

Danyelle Nall was recognized as Family Member of the Month. Ms. Nall, mother of Ariyah and Taj, is the PTA President and an active member of the Family School Partnership Committee. She is dedicated to ensuring that students are successful at school by building family relationships.

  • Following the recognitions, Principal Missy Godina and Assistant Principals Deana Stinchcomb and Courtney Seman presented about the many things going on at the ELV.

    • The three main goals for the ELV this school year were to:

      • Increase Student Achievement

      • Increase Parent & Community Engagement

      • Building a Positive Climate & Culture

    • Mrs. Stinchcomb discussed how professional development and curriculum helped the ELV increase student achievement this year.

      • Pre-School adopted a new curriculum this year called PreK On My Way

        • Assessment tools, Family engagement resources, and daily learning opportunities that address all PreK developmental domains

      • Kindergarten is on their second year of implementing the Amplify CKLA curriculum.

        • Focuses on background knowledge, phonemic awareness, phonics skills and vocabulary.

      • Both grade levels continue to practice and incorporate explicit instruction strategies.

    • Mrs. Stinchcomb also spoke about the social-emotional learning that is integral to preschool and kindergarten success and how it relates to their PBIS initiatives around the building.

    • The ELV staff has done continuous professional development throughout the year to ensure effective teaching strategies in their classrooms

    • Ms. Seman followed Mrs. Stinchcomb, discussing family engagement and community partnerships.

      • As the first introduction to Euclid Schools, the ELV is especially active in creating a welcoming atmosphere for families.

      • A Family School Partnership Committee meets monthly to discuss school climate, attendance, opportunities to prepare families for school, and plan events

        • Male role models and female role models were invited to participate in events during the school day to help build partnerships between families and individual classrooms.

        • Outreach Programming

          • Visit FabLab every other week

            • Updated with new iPads and Robots to learn early coding skills

            • Projects witht the 3D printers to develop motor skills

            • Music Settlement

          • Guest readers came for African-American Read-In

          • Helping Hands Family Engagement

            • 15 different vendors attended to help provide families the tools they may need

            • Bubble and magic activities were held for the students so that they were engaged and family members could interact with the vendors.

        • The ELV PTA was chartered in 2022 and has grown to 47 members. The PTA helps sponsor activities such as Movie Night, Glow Party and a Paint-n-Sip

      • Students from the CTE Teaching Professions program come over to the ELV to help provide intervention to kindergarten students with their letters and sounds

    • Mrs. Godina finished the presentation by discussing how the ELV has worked on building climate, culture, PBIS and Staff Morale

      • Last year, the ELV earned the highest possible PBIS award, a Bronze Award, for their PBIS Intervention. They have applied to earn the same status for this school year.

        • PBIS Celebrations occur both in individual classrooms and school-wide. Some of the celebrations include

          • Ice Cream Parties

          • Dance Parties

          • Movie Day

          • Extra Recess Time

          • Playing with bubbles

          • A Beach Party

      • Student at the ELV have the opportunity to earn the status of Student of the Month. One student from each classroom earns a certificate, treat and gets to take a picture with the Euclid Panther when they become student of the month.

      • The ELV started Positive Referrals this year. Students who are displaying the 3Rs (Respectful, Responsible, Ready to Learn) are recognized over the announcements and are given a treat. Since March, teachers have submitted over 200 positive referrals.

      • The ELV takes attendance very seriously and has made attendance a main focus of the school year. This year, they’ve given out over 1200 monthly perfect attendance awards. They’ve also hosted many special events to help encourage good attendance habits. Some examples of special events include dress up days, activity days and engagement events.

      • Staff Engagement has also been at the forefront of the ELV’s objectives this school year. They’ve worked to empower leaders, celebrate successes and have had over 20 staff members lead committees that engage fellow staff members to create a unique place to work that will continue to thrive.

    • Finally, the principals acknowledged two Panther Proud Moments:

      • Student Bryan B. wrote and illustrated a book entitled Captain Teacher Saves the World. He is currently working on the sequel.

      • Dr. Tonica Gill earned her Ph.D in the Philosophy of Education.

  • Following the presentation from the ELV, Board Member Pam Turos gave a Legislative Liaison Report and Board Member Selina Wright gave a Student Liaison Report.

  • There was one visitor comment

    • Sue Amato, a retiring teacher, thanked the Board of Education for recognizing the retiring staff, thanked Euclid for the opportunity to teach Euclid children for over 35 years, and acknowledged her fellow retirees. She reflected on some of her favorite memories and moments while teaching at Euclid High School

Reports and Recommendations of the Treasurer

  • This portion of the meeting covered the financial data of the district. Euclid Schools Treasurer Steve Vasek led the Board Members through District Financial Statements.

  • The Board approved the Financial Data and approved continuing the tax rates for 2024

  • The Board approved the reappointment of a staff member in the treasury department

Reports and Recommendations of the Superintendent

  • Personnel

    • The Board approved changes to Certified and Classified personnel in the form of resignations, terminations, retirements, permanent substitute appointments, non-teaching appointments, non-teaching assignments extra duty, athletic duty, athletic duty resignations

      • Adjusting some positions in an effort to right-size the District

      • This approval included the renewal of school principals and assistant principals, renewal of teachers with new contracts, new hires and tenure status.

  • Contracts/Agreements

    • The Board approved contracts regarding: 

      • US Together Inc.

        • Qualified interpreters for those that need assistance through sign language

      • Open Doors Academy

        • Partnership will provide educational support and enrichment for EMS and Shoreview, funded through 21st Century Grant

      • College Now Partnership

        • CollegeNow will submit a grant through the 21st Century Grant

      • Tri-C CCP

        • Approves the partnership Euclid Schools has with Tri-C for College Credit Plus Classes

  • Miscellaneous

    • The Board reviewed and approved Facility Requests from 20 different community and athletic groups.

    • The Board approved the Summer Food Service Program which will provide breakfast and lunch for children under 18 throughout the summer. Funded through the Ohio Department of Education

    • The Board approved the usage of no more than $200,000 to provide landscaping for the High School and Middle School Campus

    • The Board approved the sealcoating and striping of parking lots at the District’s Elementary Schools.

    • The board approved a Multi-Sensory Education training for all special education staff in order to meet the requirements of Ohio’s Dyslexia law.

    • The board approved a motion to approve the extended school year and summer evaluation clinic which is required under IDEA

    • Approved a field trip for the Urban Agriculture Career Tech program to attend the Future Farmer of America Convention in Columbus

    • The Board reviewed and deleted one board policy

    • The Board conducted a First Reading of nine new or revised policies

Public Participation

  • There was no Public Participation

Superintendent’s Informal

  • Superintendent Papouras recognized the end of the school year and encouraged students to finish the year and quarter strong.

  • Superintendent Papouras emphasized that the schools did not receive 5 Million dollars in the Safety Grant, but did receive $500,000 which will be used to modernize the radio communications systems that the Department of Public Safety uses.

  • He reminded families about Commencement, which will be held on May 18th in Euclid Community Stadium.

  • He also talked about attending Euclid Relays and what a pleasure it was to honor Jessica Beard by naming the track after her.

Board Member’s Informal

  • Board Member Donna Sudar congratulated senior scholarship winners, whished all the seniors good luck in the future and thanked all the staff for another great school year.

  • Board President Kathy DeAngelis spoke about how much she enjoyed attending the Freight Farms Grand Opening and how passionate Dr. Stephens and his students are. She also wished everyone a fun and safe summer.
