September is Attendance Awareness Month, a nationwide recognition of the connection between regular school attendance and academic achievement. We’ve partnered with the Cleveland Browns Foundation’s Stay in the Game! Attendance Network to remind students and families that every day in school supports learning, connection and progress. Attendance habits established during the first weeks of school can shape the rest of the year.

This week, we released a new video with our Attendance Liaisons at Euclid High School and Euclid Middle School explaining chronic absenteeism. Ohio defines chronic absenteeism as missing 10 percent or more of the school year for any reason, including excused and unexcused absences. Missing one out of every 10 school days places a student on pace to be considered chronically absent. Chronic absenteeism is different from truancy, which only considers unexcused absences.

Regular attendance is especially important as students develop foundational reading skills. In the early grades, students learn to recognize words, expand their vocabulary and understand what they read. As they advance through school, they rely on those skills to follow directions, solve math problems, explore science, understand history and learn independently.

Since the start of September, our schools have been celebrating students who are building strong attendance habits. At the Early Learning Village, students were surprised with a Perfect Attendance Day. 12 of the school’s 16 kindergarten through 2nd-grade classrooms had every student present. Those classrooms received a special visit from the ELV sticker store as a reward.

Families can support regular attendance by preparing for school the night before, maintaining consistent bedtime and morning routines, scheduling appointments outside school hours when possible and developing a backup transportation plan. We understand that illnesses, emergencies and other challenges happen. Families experiencing a barrier to regular attendance are encouraged to contact their child’s school so we can help.

Let’s continue building strong habits and keeping the momentum going. We need Every Panther, Every Day!
